Introduction : Minimalism

This extreme form of abtract was first introduced in the late 1950s with Frank Stella, his black paintings being exhibited in the Museum of Modern art in New York in 1959. With using simple geometric shapes to create paintings and sculptures, artists then fabricated highly simple drawings. Once again, Frank Stella was a well known artist who incorperated Minimalism in his paintings-- but he isn't the only one! The art movement flourished in the 1960s to 1970s, artists such as Earl Andre, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin and Robert Morris carried the art through there own. During the decade, new influences and adjustements of styling occured, mediums of varied peices changing or evolving. In the 1970s Minimalism began increasing in popularity in America and in Europe, museum curators, art dealers, publications, even systems of private & governement patronage were used to promote famous artists.
